Marvellous Valley Chronicle: The Creatures

..........................................................................

Northern Black Drake (Pachydraco nigra borealis)
Is a specie of true dragons found throughout the Northern hemisphere. It's one of the most widespread specie and the most common seen of all the large breed of dragons.

A very large creature with the length up to 9 metres and 13 metres long winspans. It's the biggest living dragon and flying creature in the world, surpassed only by the extinct gigantic Eurasian Stepped Dragon by mass and length and rival by the even more ancient giant Azhdarchids and Permian Drake in height.

Unlike the secretive and shy relative, the Southern Black Drake. Northern Black Drake surprisingly adapt to the life close to humans and other sophont race. They inhabit mainly in the highland and mountain area. They are higly gregarious comparing to other known large species, but not to the same degree as some sea dwelling or small cave dwelling dragons. They usually travel and search for food alone or in small group during day time and only return to their rookery at night, which could contain up to thirty dragons, young and adult which will semi-peacfully share the space in their night time sleep.

Northern Black Drake is vicious predator and they mainly hunt big games that inhabit the same area such as mountain dwelling bovids, deer, horses or even smaller dragons. Livestock raid may occurs in the area close to human's settlement and it often turns into conflict between people and dragons. They are considered very dangerous pest to deal with. A well fed dragon can unleash searing flame that is enough to engulf a small house and burns everything into crisp. Thanks to high concentration of gas producing bacteria found in their special crop which is much bigger than other dragons, a black drake can pack enough gas for it to burn down an entire village if not being stopped.

They're considered fast breeding dragon for its size. Male, which is 10% bigger may mate with a lot of female every year during rutting season. Female singly taking care of her egg which she only laid one per breeding in the isolated den, away from other dragons. The egg was incubated in the same manner as bird, under the blood vessel-riched membrane wing and take 6 months to hatch. Dragon pup is born with their eyes open and their limps mobile but can't fly until they are one year old. Mother would bring the pup food and teach it to hunt. The young dragon will continue living with its mother to another one or two years even if it can already fly. They would accompany their mother everywhere and even rest near her at the rookery outside the breeding season. even help their mother taking care of the newer pups born in the later year.

Northern black drake are still far from becoming endangered. But as their range started to be occupied by humans and their hunting ground decrease, along with the increased of the conflict between men and dragons. Their future is not quite glorious....

I like your depiction of a dragon. I have a similar concept for my own setting which is still in development, except the dragons are Archosaurians and have feather like integument.
